Test that your backup actually works
Restore a single file from your backup to confirm it is working correctly. Many people discover their backup has been failing silently only when they need it most.
Why this matters
Most people only discover their backup has not been working when they need it after a device failure or ransomware attack. Testing your backup takes five minutes and confirms that your files can actually be recovered — not just that the backup software appears to be running.
How to do it
- Open your backup service: iCloud, Google One, OneDrive, or your external backup software.
- Navigate to a specific file — a recent document or photo you would notice was missing.
- Restore that single file to a different folder on your device.
- Open the restored file and confirm it is intact and up to date.
- If the backup cannot be accessed or the file is missing, troubleshoot the backup service immediately — do not wait until you need it in a crisis.
