Screen lock, PIN, and biometrics on Android

Your screen lock is the first line of defence against anyone who picks up your phone. This guide walks you through setting up a strong lock screen PIN or password and adding biometric options such as fingerprint or face unlock.

Why your screen lock matters

Without a strong screen lock, anyone who picks up your phone can access your emails, banking apps, and saved passwords instantly. A six-digit PIN is significantly harder to guess than a four-digit one, and a password is stronger still.

  • A pattern lock is less secure than a PIN: patterns leave smudge trails on the screen
  • Four-digit PINs have only 10,000 combinations; six-digit PINs have 1,000,000
  • A password with letters and numbers is the strongest option but least convenient

Setting your PIN or password

To change or set your screen lock:

  • Open Settings and search for "Screen lock" or go to Settings > Security > Screen lock
  • Choose PIN (recommended minimum: six digits) or Password
  • Avoid obvious choices: your birthday, 123456, 000000, or phone number
  • Confirm your choice and tap Save or OK

Adding fingerprint or face unlock

Biometrics make it faster to unlock your phone without weakening security. Your PIN remains as a backup. To set up fingerprint recognition:

  • Go to Settings > Security > Fingerprint (name varies by manufacturer)
  • Enter your PIN when prompted, then follow the on-screen instructions
  • Scan the same finger from multiple angles for better recognition accuracy
  • Add a second finger as a backup, for example your other index finger
  • For face unlock: Settings > Security > Face Recognition, note that face unlock is less secure than fingerprint

Screen timeout settings

Your screen lock is only effective if it activates quickly when you put your phone down. Adjust your timeout:

  • Go to Settings > Display > Screen timeout (or Screen sleep)
  • Set it to 30 seconds or 1 minute: enough for normal use without leaving your phone exposed
  • Avoid "Never" timeout; this means your phone never auto-locks
  • Use the power button to lock your phone immediately when you put it down
