Home network security for Android users

Your home Wi-Fi network connects your Android phone to the internet, and is often the least-secured link. This guide covers the key steps to secure your home router and Wi-Fi network, which protects every device that connects through it.

Why your home network matters

Your router is the gateway between all your home devices and the internet. If it is compromised, an attacker can intercept traffic from every device connected to it, including your phone, laptop, and smart home devices. The good news: basic router security takes less than 30 minutes to set up.

  • Most home routers come with weak default settings, including generic passwords that are publicly documented
  • An insecure router can redirect your traffic through an attacker's server without you knowing
  • Routers are rarely updated automatically; they need manual firmware updates

Router security basics

These are the most important steps for securing your home router:

  • Change the router's admin password: log in to your router (usually at 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1) and change it from the default
  • Change the Wi-Fi network name (SSID): do not use your name, address, or router model as the network name
  • Set the Wi-Fi password: use WPA3 if available, or WPA2; never use WEP, which is easily broken
  • Set a strong Wi-Fi password: at least 16 characters with a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols
  • Disable remote management: your router should not be accessible from outside your home network

Wi-Fi settings to check on Android

From your phone, there are a few additional steps:

  • Set your home Wi-Fi to a Private network: tap the network in Settings > Wi-Fi > tap the network name > Network details and check Privacy is set to Use device MAC
  • Disable auto-connect to open networks: Settings > Network & internet > Wi-Fi > turn off Connect to open networks
  • Forget networks you no longer use: tap saved networks and remove old connections

Keeping your router updated

Router firmware updates patch security vulnerabilities. Most routers do not update automatically:

  • Log in to your router and look for a firmware update option (usually in the Administration or Advanced section)
  • Check the router manufacturer's website for your model and download updates if needed
  • Some ISP-provided routers update automatically: check your ISP's support documentation
  • Consider replacing a router that has not received a firmware update in several years
